OBDII Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Lookup
On Board Diagnostics (OBD II) is an enhanced diagnostics monitor built into a vehicle’s Powertrain Control Module (PCM), as of 1996 all vehicles had to be OBD II compliant.
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)
There hundreds of DTCs that can occur, which indicate that some subsection of the vehicle is experiencing a problem.
When one of these errors occurs, usually it will turn on the Malfunction Indicator or “check engine” Light on the dashboard.
By using a simple code reader plugged into the OBD II port, you can easily retrieve these DTCs, which will greatly reduce the time and effort required to isolate a particular issue with a vehicle.
Each OBD II Diagnostic Trouble Code has 5 characters, starting with a letter to indicate the general sub-system where the error occurred.
For example : P1209 is the Ford specific Powertrain code for an Injection Control Pressure (ICP) system fault, with the probable cause being the Injection Pressure Regulator (IPR) valve being stuck.
